I just received the above email. Screenshot captured.
No need to put any fellow blogger on blast so I avoided including names.
I will say that this email typifies one terrible blogging mistake that ensures you lose money daily.
For reference, the link I shared was simply a link to my blog home page. Said home page includes links to free content and premium offerings. Like any professional bloggers.
The huge mistake this blogger made is common among struggling, unknown bloggers.
Profits Over People
This blogger is entitled to charge money for a sponsored post. We all are.
But I’d never heard of his blog. Never heard of him.
He saw my blog. Spotted a few products and services. Instantly, he decided to charge me for a sponsored post because he put profits (making money off of a guy who’s making money) over people (building a relationship with me).
So since I will not pay $35 to appear on an unknown blog that $35 in profits will cost him:
- multiple tweets to my 50,000 targeted, engaged Twitter follows
- the chance to align his blogging brand with a guy who has been featured on world renowned blogs
- a spike in blog traffic as I promote my guest post across multiple channels
- a friendship with me
As you see, the quick $35 profit he’s trying to get now is costing him hundreds and thousands of dollars in current and future profits, but more than that, he’s missing an opportunity to build a bond with an experienced, established blogger.
How the Big Dawgs (and Dawgettes) Do It
Joe Elliott just published my guest post at One Man Wiki.
Zac Johnson gave me guest posting rights here on Blogging Tips.
Janice Wald publishes my guest posts regularly at Mostly Blogging.
None of these successful bloggers said,
“Well, since you are promoting premium products and services I will charge you $35 to make money off of you since you are making money from your site.”
Quite the contrary. These bloggers encourage me to promote my products and services. They put people over profits.
Is it any wonder why Zac has made millions online? Why Joe and Janice run thriving blogging businesses?
When you put people over profits, the profits grow. Really quickly. When you are generous, the Universe is generous to you. When you freely promote other blogger’s products and services you make more money with your products and services, well past the point where you’d feed the need to charge $35 for a sponsored post.
One reason why my sponsored posts rates start at $500 is because I helped a ton of folks make a lot of money by promoting their products and services aggressively. I learned from the best that when you put people over profits the profits take care of themselves, and keep expanding as I help more folks grows their blogs and businesses by promoting them.
Don’t see the world solely through a financial prism.
If you promote other folks and their income streams as freely as you promote your own products and services you will make more money than you ever dreamed of.
A ton more than $35 per sponsored post 🙂
