6 Things Your Blog Readers Want From You (Besides Great Content)

You’ve likely heard the phrase “content is king” so much in the blogosphere that you’d like to cry.

As much as people harp on it, you have to ask yourself: is content really everything?

You might be able to create great content an build an audience by cranking out popular posts, but would you have a loyal and thriving audience?

Would they listen to you? Would they trust you? Would they buy†from you?

From my experience (and the experience of many others), I’ve found that readers want more than insanely useful content.

They want consistency, authority, personality, design, passion, and trust.

Is your writing giving these things to them?

If not, you may be setting yourself up for failure.

Let’s break down how you can give you readers what they want…

1.) Consistency

Consistency + commitment (together) is one of the ‘6 Key Principles of Influence’ as laid out by psychology professor Robert Cialdini.

People are more easily influenced when you get them to commit (foot in the door technique), and will go out of their way to be consistent.

The thing is, they also want these things from you.

What does consistency mean for a blogger anyway?

You might think that it means just scheduling (or “daily blogging”), but there is much more to it than your posting schedule.

Readers look for consistency in:

  • Style of content
  • Tone of writing
  • Length & information presentation
  • Context (or topic) of your content

To give you a quick example, I write about psychology + content marketing on my blog Sparring Mind.

While my blog is a “marketing blog”, the focus on content marketing and psychological research means I shouldn’t be writing about things like “affiliate marketing”, “PPC” or “BlackHat SEO”.

My readers signed up for my list for psychology info combined with content marketing/blogging strategies, so I must deliver.

I also write very long posts, and post very infrequently.

You might hear people recommending that you blog daily, but it matters more that you’re consistent with how you create your content: if I started blogging daily and reducing my post counts to 500 words, I would piss a lot of people off!

People come to my site for 5000+ words on guest posting or lengthy interviews with people like Rafal Tomal, the lead designer of Copyblogger.

Stay consistent to your readers expectations, and they will reward you with loyalty.

2.) Personality

Your blog is much more than just a catalog of things to read.

It’s a user-interface, it’s a community, and most importantly of all, it’s you.

Although your blog can grow to become “bigger than yourself”, step 1 begins with you, and your blog should reflect that.

Your content shouldn’t read like a Wikipedia article: faceless, and overly objective.

Put some personality into each post, push some buttons, and add yourself†to the discussion.

I don’t follow the blogs that are in my reader because I enjoy generic, boring content that doesn’t get me fired up.

I like when I’m awed, outraged, or just plain enjoying myself.

I don’t get things feelings reading an encyclopedia, so your blog shouldn’t read like one either.

3.) Passion

This is no better way to avoid the problems of #2 than by having #3.

In a similar vein, listening to someone present on a topic they have no passion for is boring!

You think you can hide that behind your writing?

You may think so, but you’re wrong.

People pick up on passionate writing, and it has to come from a real in-depth

Have you ever read an article that got you excited?

Peaking emotions tends to get people to take action (like subscribe to your blog), and drab articles that are far†too vanilla do not.

Being yourself can also lead to other big gains for your blog.

Does something make you angry? Does something else bring you great joy?

Blog about it.

Articles that stir up†controversy†or that inspire people deeply are the kind of articles that get shared.

Unleash your excitement and your opinions on your blog, and don’t worry about making enemies.

If you haven’t made a few people mad through your passionate blog posts, you’re probably doing it wrong. 😉

4.) Authority

Authority is another pillar of influence as mentioned by Cialdini.

The best part is, you don’t need a blogging PhD or need to be a world class expert in order to create authority.

In the online world, social proof can come in many forms.

You need to show people that you have the authority to teach them what they want to do.

You can follow the “level-up” method of blog writing, or writing for the person just below you in skill level.

I wouldn’t call myself the “Best Content Marketer in the World”, but I know enough to inform those who maybe aren’t as†knowledgeable†as myself, or maybe they are, but they can still get value from my insights.

How can you build authority?

Showcase where you’ve been featured.

Show off your current following (if you have a decent following!)

Include case studies, interviews with recognized†experts, and break down strategies that truly help people with their problems.

People don’t want “this might work” advice from “some guy”, they want “this will solve your problem”†advice from somebody with authority.

5.) Trust

Why should people listen to you if they can’t trust you?

As Warren Buffet is noted for saying:

It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.

So, how can you build trust on your blog?

Simple:

  • Don’t lie to readers – should you ever make the mistake, fess up and apologize, immediately.
  • Make promises and deliver on them – don’t talk or promise bigger than you can deliver, and always complete what you promise to readers.
  • Never stop learning about your audience – as soon as you lose sight in who your readers reallyare, you’ll start losing your readers.
  • Stay humble, say thank you – your readers make your blog, don’t ever forget that and be sure to thank them.
  • Be honest to yourself – write like you talk, discuss topics you know, don’t “fake” anything; a trusting audience starts with being honest to yourself.
  • Show some love – people trust people who help others, so respond to most of your emails, and (*gasp*) don’t be afraid to link out every once in a while!

Unless you plan on becoming a scam artist, you need to create this kind of trust over time.

It will be paramount†to your blog’s success, and your branding depends on it.

6.) Design

If you were asked: “What makes you trust a website?”, what would you say?

Amazing, informative content?

Turns out, our brains say otherwise.

In a recent study, researchers found that it was actually design†that evokes the most trust from first time visitors!

When’s the last time you really broke down and analyzed your blog design? Have you ever†thought about how your design is effective conversions?

Readers (especially nowadays) demand that your blog look “clean” and professional.

Luckily, it doesn’t take amazing design skills to appease them, you just need to keep the following things in mind:

  • ‘Readability – make your blog easy to read with large fonts and liberal use of line-spacing and white space around your content. Your blog’s typography should be inviting, not scare people away!
  • Colors – colors matter big time for your blog: links need to be obvious and apparent, and your link color should never†be used for non-linkable aspects (like H1 tags). You also want to use colors that make you stand out in your space; are blogs in your niche always using black? Go minimal/white and use orange links!
  • Navigation – if people cannot find what they want, they will always find an exit. Don’t make your resources and articles hard to find, and NEVER create a site layout that might be viewed as “confusing”.
  • Kill Clutter – you must†destroy clutter on your homepage, minimalism converts, because when people have too many options, they often choose none.

Think of your blog as a “user interface” to access your content: it’s not a book, it’s an experience, so treat it as such!

Running a well-stocked, self-hosted, WordPress blog showing off your writing skills is the most direct way to earn a lucrative living through freelance writing. Why? People with ample means get to see what you can offer through your blog, then, pay up. Both parties win. You have fun rendering a useful service. Clients get helpful, business-building content.

Blogging is a skill freelance writers need learn, and practice, to grow their business through blogging.

Follow these 4 tips to make money freelance writing through your blog.

1: Show Off Your Writing Skills by Publishing Content

Most aspiring freelance writers expect to make money freelancing without showing off their writing skills for free. Why in the heck would anybody hire you if they have no idea what you do, how you do it and why you do it?

Show off your writing skills by publishing content to your blog. Be generous. Publish one post weekly, at a minimum. Running a freelance writing blog seems smart to me. Along with teaching people how to be a skilled freelance writer, you build your friend network and show prospective clients your writing stuff.

Note; do not hold back. Many freelance writing blogger newbies publish one post and expect the floodgates of traffic, profits and clients to open up. Nope. Be generous, patient and persistent to gain client trust and to build your business over the long haul.

Get out of a competitive, poverty conscious vibe.

Enter into an abundant, generous, vibe.

Comment genuinely on fellow freelance blogs. Promote freelancers on your blog. Promote freelance writers on social media.

Here’s how money works, guys; if you do not fear losing money or clients to other freelance writers, you make tons of money through freelance writing over the long haul because all freelance buddies you make through your generosity promote you, endorse you and heck, some may even hire you.

Be generous. Help people. Make friends. Amplify your reach. Grow your business.

3: Build a Clear Freelance Writing Services Page

If you claim to be a freelance writer you better publish a clear, easy to understand, freelance writer page.

List specific services offered. Be clear to attract ideal clients who love what you offer.

Consider adding your writing rates to avoid tire kickers and other folks who want to bargain, barter and do other silly stuff. You are a business person. Bartering is for people in a Middle Eastern Souq. Set fixed prices. If people cannot afford your prices they can move on to another freelancer. Have posture.

Feel free to show off client testimonials if you have these endorsements but I have found this; if you get clear on your writing skills, show off your work through free content and clearly state what you offer, clients will find you and hire you. I did not even have a freelance business page when I landed my highest paying client. This shows you the power of clarity and mental alignment.

4: Build Blogging and Freelance Writing Posture

Please guys, do not barter, bargain or debate your writing rates. Do not charge $5 for a 600 word post. Do not work for peanuts just to say you landed a client. Do not work for demanding, overbearing clients. Never work for someone unless the person aligns with you, your values and your work.

Work for nice people who appreciate what you have to offer. This is the path toward great success online.

You choose clients. You pick clients. Have posture. Think and act abundantly.

Most freelancers struggle terribly because they have little or no posture. Believe in yourself. Believe in your abilities. Have faith. Trust in yourself.

The more you practice writing the more you gain confidence and clarity in your offering.

By meeting their expectations with every post you write, you can develop a sustainable stream of blog traffic over a period.

Therefore, it is crucial that you develop a writing voice that resonates with your readers and then sticking with it. You need to play your brand and persona across all your blog posts, starting with the very first post you’ll be writing.

Do: Edit before publishing

Before hitting the “Publish” button, you need to make sure that there are no grammar mistakes and errors in your writing. Your command of the language is crucial if you want to send the right message to your readers.

A post that’s filled with errors will cause readers to leave your blog and possibly not read another post from you. If you can’t write correctly, then why should your audience read your posts?

Don’t: Worry about word count

If you’re counting words when writing your post, then you’re blogging for the wrong reasons.

When writing, your focus should be communicating ideas as clearly as possible.

For SEO reasons, you want your post to be as long as possible. According to the latest studies, your post should be at least 1,890 words if you want to rank on top of Google Search.

However, if you can’t reach that many numbers of words, you don’t have to beat yourself up about it. Having lots of words doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s a great post.

What’s more important is that you can share everything that your readers need to know about the topic. By focusing on the quality of the post and not the number of words, you can engage your audience and keep them longing for more.

Do: Promote your post

Promoting your post is not part of the writing process. However, part of your job as a full-fledged blogger is to be a marketer as well.

Sharing your first blog post is your step towards reaching out to your online audience. After all, your post won’t promote itself. You need to proactive share your blog post to the right channels, so you show it to as many people interested in your topic as possible.

Don’t get me wrong – reaching thousands of visitors for your blog post in a day is not impossible. However, like catching lightning in a jar, it’s more improbable than anything else. In fact, this problem is what plagues most bloggers. They set high goals that are difficult to achieve. As a result, they get discouraged once they realize that they can’t fulfill them and stop blogging altogether.

Therefore, it’s always better to follow a tried-and-true template that you can sustain for a long period. You don’t want to be one of those flash-in-the-pan bloggers who fizzle out as fast as they started.
