The 6th ROIfestival Celebrates Creativity



Many people see China as the land of cheap manufacturing and inexpensive labor costs. It’s no wonder that everything from the coffee mugs in your cupboard to the smartphones in your hands are typically made in China. Many people may assume that China lacks in creativity and is mostly a place of pure production. However, with such a bustling economy and such a massive population, China has a lot more innovation to offer to the world.

And that was the basic idea behind ROIfestival, the sixth of which was held recently to celebrate the “rise of innovative economy” and the the growth of the creative advertising industry in the country. The goal is to accelerate the transformation from “made in China” to “create in China,” ushering in a new and promising generation of creativity.

Thousands at 6th ROIfestival

Held in Shanghai over the course of three days, the 6th ROIfestival hosted over 4,000 attendees from many different regions, making it the largest Asian Creativity festival. During that time, 33 keynote speeches were given, two award ceremonies were held, and one grand party was held as a “salute to creativity” in China.


Much of the discussion at the festival was geared twoard the encouragement of a growing creativity economy in China in order to help develop and grow the Chinese economy as a whole. It was said that the creativity economy is the “core of new economy,” and that the professionals in the industry can promote this culture of creativity with advancing innovation.

Among the long list of keynote speakers were BBDO Global CEO Andrew Robertson, Aegis Greater China CEO Li Guifen, Netease CEO Ding Lei, and SMG Shanghai general manager Li Yong.

The Launch of “Business Creativity”

Coinciding with the 6th ROIfestival, the festival’s founder and chief organizer Onicek He also launched his own book on business creativity theory. Titled “Business Creativity,” the work was based on his survey of more than 20,000 entries over the course of the six festivals, bringing forth a new perspective on where the creative industry in China has been and where it needs to go.


In the book, Onicek He discusses not only how to maximize creativity when it comes to advertising and marketing, but also how a company can ensure that it receives the greatest possible returns on its investments when it does so. This falls right in line with the ROIfestival name and mandate. Howard Draft, the father of American Direct marketing, called “Business Creativity” a “virtual bible for people who are working in the creativity industry.

Big Awards for Big Achievements

Along with the many keynotes, ROI Awards were also given out to great achievements in the industry at the 6th ROIfestival. There were nearly 4,000 entries in all in the competition, ranging from global advertising firms to design companies. Many industries were represented, including finance, medical care, sports, and real estate.


For instance, here are representatives from Baidu accepting their search engine gold award. Baidu is easily the leading search engine in China, pushing not only suitable functionality, but also quality creativity in its efforts. In total, 120 gold award winning entries were selected. The guests that appeared on the stage also shared their opinions on the industry and provided inspiration for those who wish to achieve even greater things with the creativity and advertising industry in Asia.

China is a country that continues to grow, mature and develop. It may have a culture that is distinctly different from its counterparts in the west, but with events like the ROIfestival, it is demonstrating that it has a lot of creativity and innovation to offer to the world.

For instance, the average spend for each person on Halloween focused purchased is $74. Adult Halloween costumes account for $1.2 billion in purchases, while children’s costumes come in at $950 million.

Of the 157 million Americans who are participating in Halloween activities, 68 million of them are planning on dressing up in costumes, while 49% of them will also be partaking in their own house parties or attending one from a friend or family member. Outside of the costume costs, there is also all of the consumer spending to pay for the travel, entertainment, decorations and food for these parties as well.

The decision process for what costumes to wear or create is also changing as well. For millennials, it’s no longer about going to your local costume shop, now it’s about researching your costume ideas online and seeing what’s hot.

49% of millennials will search online for costume ideas and where to get the best deals vs. 34% actually walking into a retail location, browsing through costumes and making a purchase. In addition to the internet, everyday world trends and entertainment buzz will also play a big part in the costume buying process.

Once a costume is found, social media is the hot spot for sharing photos and Pinterest, Facebook and Instagram are the best places to find and share pictures.

At the end of the day, it’s all about making sure you are prepared for Halloween this year, but don’t worry… plenty of people will be waiting til the last minute as well. 4 out of 10 Americans will begin shopping for the big event within the first two weeks of the month, while another 25% will be waiting around until the last two weeks of the month to pick up some last minute gifts, candy and costumes.
