If you aren’t using email marketing to grow your blog and engage with your readers, then you need to change that immediately. Email marketing is a powerful tool to make your blog into something more than just a website. It lets you communicate one-on-one with subscribers, get ideas for new posts, and even sell products.

However, choosing a tool to send email can be difficult. You definitely don’t want to send messages to subscribers one-by-one in Gmail or another email service provider. That would take forever, and it wouldn’t allow you to see who’s reading your emails or which links they’re clicking on.

For a more efficient solution, you need email marketing software. There’s a huge array of options available for this, which makes it easy to get overwhelmed and end up never picking a tool at all. Features are important to consider when you’re evaluating different email marketing software. If you don’t have the necessary features to send emails and engage with subscribers the way you want, then there’s no point in using the software. How do AWeber and GetResponse compare based on features?

AWeber Features

Here’s a list of key AWeber features:

And here are the features you’ll get when you use GetResponse:

It’s difficult to compare the features of AWeber and GetResponse since the two programs offer different things and target different audiences. AWeber is strictly an email marketing program. It doesn’t try to be anything more, and its features reflect that.

GetResponse, on the other hand, aims to be a complete digital marketing suite. Thus, they include additional features such as landing pages, webinars, and even basic CRM tools. Therefore, one feature set might appeal more to you over another based on what you do.

If you want email marketing (and nothing else), then the features in AWeber have you covered. On the other hand, if you want other marketing tools, then you’ll definitely need to use GetResponse.

Finally, if you’re just looking for something that will let you reliably send email to subscribers, either tool will do the job. Many of the differences in features only matter if your blog or business is at a more advanced level.

2. Ease of Use

You don’t want to spend lots of time reading documentation or watching tutorial videos; you want to engage with your subscribers and grow your blog. Which program gets out of the way and lets you do this, offering the most intuitive interface possible?

This really depends on your preferences when it comes to using a piece of software. GetResponse is far more visual, offering calendar views, map views, and other sorts of analytics that make it very easy to visualize subscriber activity. If you like highly visual programs, then you’ll love GetResponse.

AWeber, in contrast, is a bit more traditional in its design. It looks like a lot of other email marketing programs such as MailChimp or ConvertKit. It’s less visual, but this could be a good thing if you prefer a more minimalist design without lots of fancy graphics.

3. Pricing

Neither AWeber or GetResponse is free, and that’s a good thing. Paying for software ensures that its developers can continue to innovate, fix bugs, and deliver new features. But while it’s worth paying for good software, that doesn’t mean you should pay any more than you have to (especially if you’re just starting out). How do Aweber and GetResponse compare when it comes to their pricing plans?

AWeber Pricing

AWeber’s pricing structure is based on the number of subscribers you have. Here’s how that breaks down:

  • 0–500 subscribers: $19 per month
  • 501–2,500 subscribers: $29 per month
  • 2,501–5,000 subscribers: $49 per month
  • 5,001–10,000 subscribers: $69 per month
  • 10,001–25,000 subscribers: $149 per month
  • More than 25,000 subscribers: Custom quotes available

AWeber offers a 30-day free trial to decide if the service is right for you. They do require you to enter credit card information to sign up for the trial, but you are free to cancel anytime before your trial ends to avoid being charged.

Regardless of your list size and monthly payments, you’ll receive all the features that AWeber has to offer, including their responsive customer support (which we discuss in more detail below).

GetResponse Pricing

In contrast to AWeber, the pricing structure for GetResponse is a bit more complicated. It’s based both on number of subscribers and the features you want. For the sake of simplicity, we’ll assume your email list is no larger than 10,000 subscribers (if that’s the case, then you’re too advanced to be reading this blog).

Based on that assumption, here’s how the pricing for GetResponse works out for each of their three plans:

  • Email — This plan is perfect for email marketing beginners. It costs $15 per month for up to 1,000 subscribers, allows you to have one user, and includes autoresponders, basic landing pages, and simple marketing automation. As your subscriber count goes up, the pricing increases as follows:
    • Up to 2,500 subscribers: $25 per month
    • Up to 5,000 subscribers: $45 per month
    • Up to 10,000 subscribers: $65 per month
  • Pro — If you’re a bit more advanced, you can get the Pro subscription. It starts at $49 per month (if you have less than 5,000 subscribers). In addition to the features in the Email plan, it includes more advanced landing pages, webinars for up to 100 attendees, marketing automation tools tailored to ecommerce, and a CRM system. You also get up to three users, perfect for a growing team. For 10,000 subscribers, the price increases to $75 per month.
  • Max — The Max plan will have features that most readers of this blog won’t need, but it’s good to know what’s out there. It starts at $165 per month for lists of less than 10,000 subscribers. You’ll get all the same features as Pro, plus webinars for up to 500 attendees, consultation on campaigns from GetResponse staff, and up to five users.

Also, GetResponse offers an Enterprise for large organizations. Since the minimum email list size for this plan is 100,000, we won’t discuss it in any more detail here. However, you should know that GetResponse offers a free 30-day trial for all of their plans. What’s more, you can try any of the plans without having to put in credit card information.

If you’re a complete beginner who hasn’t even started building an email list, then it will be cheaper to start out with GetResponse. That is, assuming you’re using their Email plan and don’t require any of the more advanced features of the Pro plan (most new bloggers won’t).

4. Customer Support

Hopefully, you’ll never have a problem when using either AWeber or GetResponse. No matter how well-designed or well-documented a program is, however, you’re bound to need help eventually.

When that time comes, you want a company you can count on. You want customer support that’s friendly, quick to respond, and helps you solve your issue (without making you feel stupid). Which of the two excels at providing customer support?

AWeber Customer Support

AWeber offers 24/7 email and live chat support to all customers, regardless of how many subscribers they have. They also offer phone support from 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. EST Monday through Friday, as well as an extensive Knowledge Base where you can search for answers to common questions.

In addition, their customer service has won awards, with recognition from the Stevie Awards and the National Customer Service Association.

GetResponse Customer Support

GetResponse is also quite responsive on the customer service front. They offer 24/7 live chat support, as well as email support in seven different languages. GetResponse also has a Help Center you can visit to search for your questions or just learn more about how to use the program.

GetResponse has won some awards as well, with four Stevie Awards under their belt in the past five years.

Comparing the two services, we still think that AWeber wins due to offering phone support. There’s just no substitute for being able to speak to someone about a problem you’re having and hearing their reassuring voice tell you it’s going to be okay.

If phone support doesn’t matter to you, however, then both companies are more or less equal in their customer support offerings.

AWeber vs GetResponse: Who Wins?

At the end of the day, there’s not a clear winner between AWeber and GetResponse. The two services are simply too different to say that one is better than the other. Rather, each is better for a different type of customer.

If you run your blog as an independent entity, then AWeber is a better choice. All the other features in GetResponse won’t be necessary for someone just composing and sending email updates about their latest blog posts.

On the other hand, if your blog exists to promote a small business (such as an ecommerce store, consulting practice, or online course), then GetResponse is the better tool to use. You’ll find their marketing tools to be very useful even with a small number of subscribers, and the lack of these tools in AWeber could be frustrating, requiring unnecessary workarounds.
