Even though there are more than three billion people on the Internet, it doesn’t really seem like it when your website does something wrong. In fact, all it takes is one hiccup and the reputation of your website is tarnished. One small mistake and there are press releases everywhere about this horrible thing your website did and why people should not be visiting it anymore.

The question is – what should you do when you are in this situation? How can you repair the reputation? More importantly, what should you avoid doing so you do not make it worse?

Dumb Things You Really Should Not Do

If you are just getting started in the internet world, there are some things you can avoid doing to prevent yourself from blowing up your reputation before you even have time to build a good one.

Don’t Send Out Spam. People do not like when you send them emails without having their permission to do so. They do not like being added to a mailing list without permission either. There are plenty of ways to get traffic to your website without spamming people’s email.

Don’t Stuff Keywords. Stuffing keywords into your content just to improve your ranking on Google is actually going to hurt your website more than it helps it. Google is well aware of people who do this and they will actually give you a worse ranking for doing so. Keyword stuffing also just tends to make your content read bad to anyone who actually reads it.

Don’t Self-Promote on Forums. It is just in poor taste for you to hop on a forum and promote your website or blog. There is nothing wrong with getting on a forum and sharing a blog or website you enjoy, but doing about your website just makes you look bad. You may be able to have your link in the signature of your account on a forum. But, you need to make sure you are following all the rules and not overdoing the signature either.

Don’t Post Controversial Statements. There is nothing wrong with having an opinion. There is nothing wrong with having certain beliefs. This does not mean you need to share them with everyone. Keep your opinions on race, religion, and politics to yourself. All it is going to do is cause problems because you cannot be on everyone’s side in this situation.

Rebuilding a Destroyed Reputation

Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to rebuild your reputation. First, you need to stop doing whatever you did to destroy it. Are you getting bad reviews for something you are doing? If so, you need to change what you are doing. Your reputation is not going to fit itself. You have to put a little effort into fixing it.

You are not going to be able to rebuild your reputation overnight. It will be a process that takes time. But, you can rebuild your reputation if you put enough time and effort into it.
