When we see a plethora of wide array of blogs, it is really astonishing to know that they surfaced on the web in 1990s. At that time of the year, no one may have really foreseen about the stupendous growth that the blogs will experience over the years.
Previously, people used blogs for expressing their thoughts and views that catered only to the need of specific group of readers. Moreover, these blogs were created by the people having in-depth knowledge of the programming languages, but the problem here that cropped up was that only a few numbers of the technically minded people were able to use the blogs.
However, in the year 1999, an online application was started named ‘Blogger’ that was pretty much user-friendly and easy to understand. When the search engine giant Google acquired Blogger in 2003, then no one predicted that it will evolve into such a great online phenomenon.

In the Year 1994
The first blog was created: Links.net by Swarthmore college student Justin hall, he called it his “Personal Homepage”
In the Year 1997
The term “Weblog” was coined by John Barger, author of Robot Wisdom. He wanted to reach audiences who could relate to his work.
In the Year 1998
Jonathan Dube from the Charlotte observer wrote a weblog covering hurricane Bonnie. This was the first time a news site used a weblog to cover a story.
Open Dairy went online on October 20th, founded by Bruce Ableson. Open Diary had an innovative comment feature that influenced the nature of today’s blog comments.
In the Year 1999
“Blog” was coined by peter Mertholz, he broke “weblog” to “We Blog” on his personal blog Peterme.com.
Pyro Lobs launched Blogger that August. This very quickly became a popular and dedicated blog publishing tool. The first platform to push blogging in to the mainstream.
In the Year 2000
Jesse James Garret claims there are 23 blogs on the internet.
In the Year 2001
“How to” articles emerged as the community of bloggers continued to grow. Gizmodo and Boing Boing were launched.
In the Year 2002
Political candidates used blogging to express their opinions, some mode breaking news!
For Example, Senate Majority Leader, Trent lott had praised U.S Senator Storm Thurmond, starting that the United State would have benefited if Thurmond that been elected president in 1948. In the 1940’s Thurmonde was then a supporter of racial segregation.
One of the first major blogging search engines was launched “Technorati”.
In the Year 2003
Pyra labs sells Blogger to Google. Google acquires Adsense from Oingo, INC.
WordPress version b2/cafelog was launched by Matt Mullenweg. 2,000 blogs in May alone were created.
Typepad is launced, blogging service by Say Media. Designers launch MySpace.
In the Year 2004
The first video blog was launched, yes! It was a year before the rise of YouTube.
In the Year 2005
YouTube launches. Intermix Media (the owner of MySpace) was brought by News Corporation for $580 million. Weblogs, Inc was purchased by AOL for $25 million. Typepad introduce mobile blogging tools.
Daily Dish published by Andrew Sullivan was moved to Time.com. Sullivan is paid a fee for his blogging services, while Time earns adverstising revenues from blogging.
Garrett M.Graff was granted white house press credentials, the first blogger to ever do so.
Internet Explorer announced they would adopt the Firefox feed icon. This will be used to represent RSS and Atom feeds, it has since become an industry standards.
An estimated $million worth of blog ads are sold this year.
In the Year 2006
Google pays $900 million to become the exclusive provider of Myspace.com.
According to Technorati’s report, there were 50 million blogs by mid-2006.
Mainstream Media teamed up with established bloggers with existing blogs like Mashable and CNN to post their articles.
In the Year 2007
Tumblr was launched and the term “Microblog” popularity further. Tim O’Really formed a bloggers code of conduct.
In the Year 2008
Posterous is launched; it allows bloggers to post short updates using its own URL shortening service. Posterous gave bloggers a quick way to post their updates via email or online chat.
In the Year 2009
The Universal McCann report revealed 77% of internet users read blogs.
Technorati reported that 15% of bloggers spend 10+ hours a week blogging. 20% of users blog via mobile device and 28% make money from blogging.
In the Year 2010
A study by Technorati revealed that approximately 35% of bloggers were making money from their blogs. It was reported that almost 39% of all bloggers were using mobile devices and tablets for blogging.
Mom bloggers in the USA become more influential as they share recipes, product reviews and parenting tips.
In the Year 2011
Google launches Google+, a new social media platform for bloggers whilst still in Beta, it has been accepted and used widely by bloggers.
UK Mum bloggers join USA Moms in becoming powerful authority in the blogosphere.

Blogging Trends in 2012 & beyond
Blogging has come a long way from its origins as essentially a past time, however what do the coming 12 or so months hold for this medium of communication?
Except the blog to become more and more lined with other means of communication. With a rise in the social media presence in 2012 and all expectations of an increase in sharing via the mediums, expect to see blogs linked and also shared to more of a degree across the Internet.
More Blogs for Bloggers
Studies by American Company Technorati suggest that individual bloggers are managing more sites. Their figures show that bloggers went from having 2 blogs on average, each in 2010 to 3 each this time last year. This would suggest that we will see more people managing more blogs in 2012.
