If you’re a blogger, chances are you’ve many times asked yourself: Are my blog posts too short? Are they too long so that no one reads them till the end? How many words should a blog post be, anyway? You’ll often find answers such as “Everything depends on the topic,” “don’t stress over the word count,” and so on.

However, we now finally have some facts. HubSpot has conducted a significant survey comparing blog posts with different word counts to determine the optimal number. The results might surprise you.

From the SEO Point of View

If you have a blog, one of your goals is probably to hold a better position on search engines, like Google. You need to know one rule: Google doesn’t like blog posts that have less than 300 words. It doesn’t mean they’re prohibited, but short posts don’t have enough information for Google to understand and position them.

However, last year, there was a significant discovery in this field. Contrary to what many people believe, readers love reading long blog posts. Of course, only if they’re engaging, relevant, and provide the information they need. According to HubSpot, the most successful blog posts have anywhere between 2,100 and 2,400 words from an SEO point of view.

No Two Blog Posts Are Same

If 2,400 words seem like a lot to you, don’t worry. No one said all your posts have to be that long. They discovered that 16 out of the 50 best blog posts of 2019 had less than 1,500 words! As you can see, it depends on several factors, such as topic, your audience, and what the point of your blog post is (travel blog, lead gen, affiliate marketing, etc.).

If you want to know how many words an average blog post has, the answer is around 1,500. That may be the ideal number for many niches such as travel, beauty, and so on. Now, you may wonder how long it takes to read 1,500 words. If we transform that into pages, 1,500 words are about three single-spaced pages or six pages with double spacing.

An average person needs around 11 minutes to read a 1,500-word blog post. Again, of course, this depends on the topic and your writing style, whether you use simple words or terminology, and so on.

How to Choose

If you’re in doubt, we suggest you just start writing naturally. If the topic is simple, there’s no need to add fluff just to meet some imaginary word target. Not to say that SEO isn’t important. It’s essential, and you should follow some basic SEO guidelines, such as using headings and not writing paragraphs that are too long and hard to follow.

However, don’t be a slave to metrics. Listen to your audience and see how they react to different types of blog posts. That’s the only way to figure out how many words a blog post should be to help you achieve the results you want.
