Every blogger can benefit from the skills of a freelance blogger and that is something that Sophie Lizard of definitely specializes in. In addition to helping bloggers write better, Sophie also helps bloggers and writers discover how to make real money in the world of online freelance writing and blogging.

1.) Please tell us about yourself and how you got into blogging?

I’m a UK-based freelance blogger and copywriter with a patchwork past as a photographic model, marketing manager, and artificial intelligence geek. I got into blogging back in 2008 as a way to promote my modeling career, then in 2009 I became a full-time freelance writer and found that a lot of my clients needed help and advice to make their blog work for their business. I deliberately angled my career in that direction once I saw the level of demand.

2.) What is the focus of your blog and why did you choose that niche?

My blog is focused on one mission: to teach writers and bloggers how to make real money from steady freelance blogging work. I chose that niche because I feel that nobody should be blogging for peanuts – if you want to make money as a freelance blogger, you might as well make *good* money! Also, I saw that there are a lot of freelance writing blogs and a few specifically about online writing, but there was no obvious place to go for information that’s exclusively about freelance blogging. So I decide to create that place, because if I was looking for it a few years ago then other people are looking for it now.

3.) How are you currently monetizing your blog traffic?

I offer one-to-one mentoring for freelance bloggers, which is a great way to get to know my audience better at the same time as earning some money. I also get occasional affiliate payments from promoting products or services I like.

4.) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you first started blogging?

Two things: that blogging needs to be all about answering the reader’s needs, and that I can get paid a lot more than I thought possible back then.

5.) What are three blogs that you visit almost daily?

Aside from client blogs, I spend a lot of time on,, and

6.) Can you give us three recommended tools/services that you use with your blogging?

I keep things pretty simple: SocialBro helps me keep up with new Twitter followers, Trello is great for organising my incoming and outgoing guest posts, and I’m always checking Flickr for cool Creative Commons images.

7.) What advice would you have for someone who is just starting with their first blog?

Relax, because nobody’s looking at it yet. Know what the point of your blog is before you write on it. Then, give your audience things they truly need. And if you want to get the most from it, start building your email list right away.

8.) What’s the best advice or tip you’ve discovered about blogging since getting started?

Empathize. Everybody needs to know they’re not alone, so if you show that you understand them, they’ll stick around to read your blog.

9.) If you only had $100 to start a new blog, how would you use it?

I’d get a year’s basic shared web hosting and a .com domain registration, and install on it. Then with the $25 or so change I had left, I’d buy candy to fuel me through the setup and customization process with a free theme.

10.) How can readers of the blog get in touch with you?

Social/blog urls
