As an online publisher, you should always be looking for new opportunities to monetize your digital content. Some strategies that may have been remarkably effective in the past may not be bringing in the same kind of revenue. What we are finding, though, is that video is increasingly popular across the board and that’s why Vinteo could be a good addition to your advertising mix.

What Is Vinteo?

Vinteo is an online advertising network that focuses exclusively on video ads. It is run by Roket Media, “an independent, venture-backed group of industry veterans looking to change the way video works.”

When I first started looking into Vinteo, I thought that the ad network was geared toward monetizing the video content of online publishers. I thought that it may be an alternative to AdSense for YouTube, for instance. That’s not the case.

Instead, Vinteo serves video ads where you may have otherwise placed a more traditional ad banner on your website. In place of a static image, the lightweight video player shows a video ad. What’s critically different here is no action is required on the part of the site visitor in order for you to make money. Vinteo video ads pay strictly on a CPM basis, so you don’t have to fret about CPA, CPS, or CPC.

Some key benefits to monetizing your online content with Vinteo include compatibility across both desktop and mobile devices, a very fast and easy setup process (which we’ll discuss further in a moment), and premium ads from well-known brands. They say you can expect high CPMs and fill rates in every geo.

A Straightforward Dashboard

Part of the challenge that some publishers encounter is that the dashboard with some ad networks can feel incredibly overwhelming. Such is not the case with Vinteo.

They’ve kept the dashboard as clean and straightforward as possible. Once you log into your account, you are presented with the basic statistics for your account, including lifetime player loads, lifetime revenue, and lifetime eCPM, along with the averages for the last 30 days, last 7 days, and yesterday.

The dashboard only consists of three sections too. You’ve got the main dashboard, a section for reports, and a page where you can access your embed codes. That’s it. They handle everything else on your behalf to keep the experience as easy as possible.

Easy Embed Codes for Optimized Ads

And it is really, really easy to get started with Vinteo. After your account has been approved, all you have to do is copy and paste the corresponding embed code on your website where you want the video ads to appear.

By default, they appear to be roughly 300 x 250 pixels, but you can adjust the size of the ad block by typing in the width and height (in pixels) into the appropriate section of the embed ad code. These fields are left blank by default. While you can put in almost any number that you want, recognize that these are videos that are being played, so you should utilize a suitable aspect ratio.

Vinteo suggests running banners that are greater than 400 pixels in width and greater than 300 pixels in height for optimal results. The most common sizes include 300 x 250, 480 x 320, 640 x 480, and 800 x 600. The video ads support mobile as long as the ad is at least 250 pixels wide and 170 pixels tall.

Here is an example of what the ads would look like when placed on a generic WordPress blog. The example here is running at 480 x 320 pixels on a theme where the content column is about 525 pixels wide. The user who arrives on the site does not need to click a “play” button, as the video will autoplay. Sound is disabled by default, but hovering over the ad reveals the option to adjust the volume. You can enable sound by default if you’d like — which generally results in higher CPM — but it could detract from the user experience.

Remember that the ad pays on a CPM basis. Visitors can click on it, but that is not required for you to generate revenue.

Since the ads run on fairly standard code, you are not restricted to how it is implemented on your site either. If you want to encapsulate it in code such that your text wraps around it, that’s totally possible. Using a WordPress plugin like Ad Inserter is a good way to manage where and when the ad appears.

And while we have largely been discussing how these video ads can be used to monetize a more traditional website, Vinteo ads can also monetize other types of content, like mobile apps too. You can load the code into your ad server, for instance, to run the ads as you see fit. It’s really flexible.

How Much Money Can I Make?

As with all advertising networks, it would be impossible to give a hard and fast rule for how much revenue you can expect to generate through Vinteo. It depends on a number of factors, like the size and quality of your traffic, different geographical locations, what units you place on your website and more.

Based on the sample report that we were provided, it looks like most of the traffic for this example account is generating somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.50 CPM. That being said, according to the FAQ page, some publishers in the network are able to earn as much as $15 CPM for their traffic, so it really varies.

The best way to find out is to run Vinteo ads for yourself for a period of time, experimenting with different sizes and placements. You can set up a number of subids for tracking purposes. Alternatively, you can also email to get an estimate through one of their publisher development experts.
