Questions To Ask Yourself Before Starting a Blog

If you’re thinking about starting a blog, there are some essential questions you should ask yourself first. The following questions need to be considered, so grab a piece of paper and jot down your answers so you feel confident about diving into the world of blogging!

What will my blog be about?

Probably one of the most important decisions to ask yourself is what your blog will be about. Will you write about a variety of topics, or stick to a single genre?  There are pros and cons with each. With a variety of topics, visitors from all over the place have a better chance of finding you. However, if your topics range so greatly, you might not gain that dedicated readership because not everybody is going to be interested in every single thing you write about. If you do write about a few different topics, try to limit them to certain types and make sure they mesh well together so your blog has a more cohesive theme.

Do I want to appeal to others or just keep a blog as a journal?

If you don’t care about what others will find on your blog, perhaps you are only keeping it as an online journal for yourself to reflect back on. That is totally fine, just make sure you decide this from the start. If you start off as an online journal, and then decide to go “public” with it, how much of what you previously wrote are you willing to share with total strangers?

Are people interested in this?

If you want to appeal to the masses, think about what interests people. Do your chosen topics appeal to them? What type of readers would you attract with your type of blog? Do you know an active group of these types of people that would be interested in reading what you have to say? Your content is king and it should offer something to the visitor that will make them want to come back!

What is my ultimate goal?

The idea of a blog sounds great, especially if you see other veteran bloggers blowing up online and making money while doing it. What is your ultimate goal for your own blog? Do you want to just gain a lot of followers? Why? Do you want to make money? How will find the traffic to make that possible?  Do you want to help people do something? Your goal will be a starting point for all of the content you produce.

Do I have the time for this?

Owning and maintaining a blog with an ultimate goal in mind takes a lot of work. Read that again: It takes a lot of work!  Does posting regularly fit in with your schedule? Think about how many posts per month you would be able to complete and figure out a schedule to help keep you on track.

Asking yourself these questions before you start a blog can really help you find a direction to take when executing your plan.
