Without question, the shiny object syndrome is affecting many aspiring business owners than anything else. You need to focus and stop getting distracted. On a lighter note – let’s not be too hard on them, after all they’re new to online business. What is the shiny object syndrome? How do you overcome it?
1. The Shiny Object Syndrome
I experienced this when I first got started online. I simply didn’t see the overall picture and I always thought the grass was greener. Let’s take a look at the symptoms:
- You’re reading books and blogs on a variety of subjects
- You’re not taking action on your knowledge
- You’re constantly looking for the magic bullet
What’s the problem of all of this?
Allow me to share some of the philosophies that guide me. Number 1, the grass is greener where you put the hose! Number 2, the money is in the action. This point can be further illustrated in the work of a contractor. A contractor makes his money by building houses.
How do they get the jobs?
A contractor gets the jobs by bidding on projects. If they don’t make bids, they don’t get jobs. On the other hand, if they want to increase their income, then they need to bid more. Makes sense, doesn’t it?
2. How to overcome the SOS
What does all this philosophy have to do with you building a successful business?
You need to develop laser focus and draw a line in the sand and go to work. First, I would recommend you get some clarity about what you’re doing online and understand the principles to creating a successful business. Here are some of the things you should understand:
- You have to have a great product to sell. (Example, watches with interchangeable bands are the riot!)
- You have to market that product, otherwise no one will know about it
The second point deserves its own paragraph. This is where every aspiring business owner trips and falls on their face. There are so many strategies for marketing products online. Ask yourself these questions:
Do I like to write? and Do I prefer being in front of a camera?
The reason I bring these up is because content is core to the internet. People are searching for information. Search engines love blogs and people love watching video. I suggest you begin your marketing quest by learning how to write or learning how to create videos that can be shared on YouTube.
Back to laser focus – master content creation and then you can move to another strategy. I will leave with one final thought and a caution to avoid being a, “Jack of all trades and master of none.”
