should-sell-blog-advertisingIn every blogger’s career, they will ponder the question “should I start accepting paid advertisers?” Nowadays it seems to be the norm. You set up some terms and ad slots and ask for a monthly fee from those advertisers in return for promoting them. So, how do you know when you’re ready to accept sponsored ads?

I think the main thing to recognize is your traffic flow. I know I say this time and time again, but you really do need the constant flow of traffic to offer any benefit to those advertisers. After all, you it’s a two way street and advertisers expect something in return for their money. They expect clicks and hopefully visitors and/or sales. If you are seeing recurring traffic at around a few hundred unique visitors per day, I think that is a great time to start. Anything below that isn’t worth it to the advertiser and you should instead start working on creating great content to raise those numbers.

If you’re unsure about how much traffic your blog receives, you probably shouldn’t start offering advertising until you become more familiar with stats and Google Analytics. You’ve probably heard some bloggers in the past say “numbers don’t matter”, but in all honesty, they do matter. They matter if you plan on offering paid spots on your site and they matter to the person considering giving you money for a chance to be included in your traffic. First and foremost, you should be able to provide an advertiser with detailed statistics of your site, including daily unique visitors and monthly pageviews. If you cannot yet do that, first try installing Analytics on your blog and wait a month or two until you are certain of your numbers.

Another thing to think about is if you will have the time to dedicate to dealing with the advertisers individually. Setting up Adsense ads and letting them do their job is one thing, but accepting paid advertising at your own set rates from companies/individuals is another. You’ll need to keep track of start and end dates and any special features they’ve signed up for that may be included in their little advertiser package. There are a few ad management services out there now to help you with things like this, like Passionfruit ads.

So when it comes down to it, only you can know if you are ready to take this next step, and if you really want to! Your numbers do play a part in the value of your site, so make sure you are worth the investment, as little or as large as it may be.
