I’m going to divulge a little secret today–I’m almost 43 and it’s still my dream to publish a novel. After I passed the mid-twenties mark I thought of myself as too old and I thought that for many years. One day it dawned on me that a person isn’t too old until they think they’re too old. So while I’m a late bloomer in the novel publishing world, I don’t consider myself too old anymore.
I’ve also felt I was too old to learn to play piano. Technically, to be a concert pianist, well I’m probably past the age of ever doing that–but I’m not too old to learn. So, at 42 I’ve taken up piano.
Okay, don’t reveal my age to anyone else. It’s our secret.
Blogging tends to lean towards the younger generation. They’ve gotten on board at a good time. But, I do see many bloggers my age and older, who are starting to build a successful career or online business. Twenty years ago it was unheard of that people in their 40’s should start a new career or business venture–they were considered too old to take that path. But times have changed and older people are actually “younger” these days than they were back then.
This post will be shorter than usual, but I want to inspire you, no matter what age you’re at in life, that dreams and goals can still be strived for. Don’t give up just because you think you’re too old to ever reach the success you desire or to publish your first novel. You’re never too old until you start thinking you’re too old. Go out and find a piano lesson at your level, go back to school and get that degree you’ve always wanted.
Blogging and the Internet have opened up many opportunities for the older generation. You have every right to grab a piece of that pie for yourself–start writing, start blogging and never grow old before your time.
