When you open up your page, you’re hit with the same boring words about you and your pets no one but you care about, and you can’t help wondering how the pros write about me pages that leap at you and grab you with both hands.
It’s daunting enough talking about yourself to the neighbors – never mind putting together an about page to be seen by your hundreds (or hundreds of thousands) of unique visitors!
Well, there’s good news: Writing a great about me page doesn’t have to be that daunting. With the right information at your disposal, you could easily create an engaging about me page — and without doling out huge sums to a copywriter too!

How To Write An About Me Page In 10 Simple Steps
1. Start Bold aka Grab Attention
You only have like eight seconds to sell yourself. What this means is that you can’t afford to beat around the bush at the beginning of your about page.
The best way to engage your reader’s short attention span is to make a bold statement that throws them off guard or makes them nod in agreement right from the beginning!
On my about page, for example, I immediately identify exactly who my target audience is.
Alternatively, you could open with a thought-provoking question as this blogger has done on her about page.
But it’s not just about making any random statement here, what you want to do in those first few lines is to identify your people!
This can only work if you know who you are trying to attract. That way, you know exactly what will stop them right in their tracks and make them keep reading the page.
2. Include an Inviting Photo Of You.
Right after grabbing attention, the next thing you want to do is create a connection and nothing does that better than a photo. Double points if it’s a smiling one!
As much as you promote your products and services, you want to make sure that you are promoting your brand too. People want to associate with the person more than the business.
The person behind a business gives life to it.
Your readers want to see you in your place (which is the place they want to get to), they want to put a face to your name!
That’s what will make your brand, business and about me page memorable.
3. Pay Attention To Your Formatting.
Many times you see an about page or even a blog post formatted with large blocks of text.
This is a complete no-no if you want to keep the attention of your readers.
What you should do instead is to make your page scannable by using shorter paragraphs. As a rule of thumb, each paragraph should contain only 2-3 sentences at a time.
I personally use a technique called bucket brigades to make sure that I’m not just formatting my work in an easy-to-read way, but also re-engaging readers at points where the copy feels boring.
If a visitor cannot skim through your about me page and understand what you and your blog are about, then you’ve got the formatting all wrong.
4. Show Off Your Expertise.
Anyone can start a website today and claim to be anything. It’s as easy as buying a domain name and hosting.
So what separates you and what makes you an expert in the eyes of your readers is that you, not just make claims, you have visible proof of your expertise.
This could be in the form of testimonials, social proof, trust logos from big sites, anything at all that backs up your claim.
Adam of Blogging Wizard, for example, adds this to his about page:

You can also show off data like traffic stats and income reports if you are in the make money blogging niche, for example.
You’ve got to show them that you know what you’re talking about. Just saying “hey, listen to me because I own a fancy car” is not enough. if you say you’re riding a fancy car, then you’ve got to show them that you’re riding a fancy car.
There’s nothing you should say that you have no backing for. If you make a claim on your about me page that you do not back, all you’ve done is raise eyebrows.
5. Speak Like a Knowledgeable Peer (Not a Boss).
This one is debatable because some people are jerks and they still command a loyal following, but I think it’s easier (and better) to reach your reader on the same level as they are.
This means to speak as someone who’s a little more knowledgeable — but not superior and is simply trying to educate in a non-condescending way.
What you want people to do is think “hey she’s really nice” and “he’s someone I’d like to chat with, someone I would like to be friends with: “she’s just like my good friend Vivian” – that’s the connection you want.
You do not want them to look at you and say “this is someone really mighty and up there and I could never ever be there”. What you do when you talk down to your reader is you put yourself on a pedestal that they could never imagine themselves reaching.
6. Write in The Language They Speak.
This one is very important.
We talked about knowing who your ideal reader is and it’s not just for you to keep it on file; you have to show them that you know who they are.
How do you do that? Simply use the language that they use in your writing!
A mom blog, for example, may use “little one” instead of “baby” if that’s what the audience uses more.
One good way to find out the language your people use is to go to the forums where they hang out.
Go to Facebook groups, subreddits, Quora, all those places where they hang out and note the words they use frequently.
Use those words and phrases to emotionally supercharge your about me page, which brings us to the next point.
7. Tell Your Story In A Way That Relates To Them.
The most powerful about me pages have one thing in common, they use words that trigger certain emotions in their readers and make them see the story as theirs too.
If I were a graphic designer for example and I’m blogging to small business owners that need to up their design skills, I could tell a story of how my business was failing so much before I learned how to design.
The story captures the pain that they are going through right now; the pain of the business failing because their designs suck and they can’t afford to hire a designer yet.
But you shouldn’t just show your beginning and end, the middle is just as important.
It captures their struggle to overcome the problem and the hiccups on the way.
It also proves that you’ve really been on that journey.
It’s one of the most effective ways to connect emotionally and to establish yourself as an expert.
So, your About Me page — more than selling you and your business, should tell their story, and push their emotional buttons.
8. Answer the Question “What’s In It For Them?”
Following on from what we just learned about pushing emotional buttons, one other thing we need to use on our About Me page is clarity.
Whoever is reading your about page should be able to come away understanding that you are not just agitating for their problem, but that you provide a clear solution too.
“This is what I will do for you. I’m going to take you from design handicapped to an expert designer, and this is going to help your business grow”.
Because in the end, the reason is to help their business grow; they don’t just want to be graphic designers for the sake of being graphic designers.
9. Make It Easy to Find What They Are Looking For.
It should be extremely easy for people to find whatever they’re looking for from your about page.
You may have a few different reader avatars and each of them wants to see specific content that relates to them.
Maybe they want to find your best content, maybe they want to find the affiliate products and tools that you use or your social media handles.
You also need to make it easy for them to find what you want them to find.
10. Include A Call To Action.
Finally, include a call to action.
There is no point getting people to your About Me page, showing them how you’re a perfect fit, and then just letting them go.
Chances are, even if they remember you they will not come back to your site unless you give them enough reason to.
You must include a call to action to either get them on your list (which is my favorite) or get them to follow you on social.
Whatever you do, ask them to take action and cause them to engage with you. That’s what will make you memorable, that’s what will create lasting fans out of them.
