How Do Search Engines Work?

Imagine the internet as a vast library and search engines as the librarians. These ‘librarians’ need to sift through billions of web pages to find and present the most relevant information based on your search query.

But how do they accomplish this feat?

1. Crawling

Search engines, like Google, operate by crawling the web using automated programs known as crawlers or bots. These bots navigate through billions of web pages, following links to discover new content.

Content can vary — it might be a webpage, an image, a video, or a PDF, but regardless, it is discovered through links. The content they find is then added to a vast index, essentially a digital library of web information.

2. Indexing

After discovering content, the search engines index it. Indexing is the process of storing and organizing the content found during crawling. Once a page is in the index, it’s in the running to be displayed as a result to relevant queries.

3. Ranking

When someone performs a search, search engines scour their index for highly relevant content and then order that content in the hopes of solving the searcher’s query.

This ordering of search results by relevance is known as ranking. Generally, the higher a website is ranked, the more relevant the search engine believes that site is to the query.

Core Concepts to Understand About SEO

Many people have the misconception that SEO is a black box that can’t be cracked. In reality, it’s fairly simple:

As search engines have evolved over the years, so has their ability to understand both intent and quality.

If you take the time to understand the intent behind a search (the “why”), and produce content that is far better than that of your competitors, you will crack the SEO code.

You Really Don’t Need to Understand SEO to Be Successful

Honestly, you don’t need to worry about the technical details at this point. As long as you have a basic fundamental knowledge of SEO, you’ll be fine.
